Mary Helen (nee Martens) Schroeder of Central Parkland Lodge, Lanigan, SK passed away at her residence on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.  She was 88 years of age.  Mary was born September 27, 1929 to Peter and Helen (nee Zacharias) Martens at Fiske, Saskatchewan. She grew up on the family farm located north of Fiske, with her two brothers and one sister. She completed grades 1-10 at Mapleton School, north of D’arcy and attended Rosthern Junior College to complete grades 11 and 12.  Due to the shortage of teachers, she attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon and received her permanent teacher’s certificate.  In the fall of 1948, she started her first teaching position at the Fortsburg School at Alingly, Saskatchewan (north of Prince Albert).  The following year she moved to the Jansen area to teach at the Auderville School located north of Jansen where she taught for six years. This is where she met Reinhold Schroeder, her future husband and they were later married on July 24, 1952.  Reinhold and Mary were united in marriage at the Fiske Mennonite Church and were blessed with four children, Lyle, Rod, Ralph and Marla. Mary was always strong in her faith.  In May, 1947 she was baptized on the confession of her faith and became a member of the Ebenfeld Mennonite Church at Fiske. On Reformation Day in 1954, she was confirmed and became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Jansen.  Mary will be remembered for her love of people, and found great joy in special times shared visiting with family and friends.  Mary and Reinhold spent countless hours attending the kids sporting activities including ball, hockey, curling and figure skating.  She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, baking and tending to her flower gardens. Some of her favorite holidays were summer vacations at Barrier Lake, visiting Marla and Nick in Canmore, watching Ralph curl in the Nipawin Carspiel and attending family reunions with her brothers and sister and their families.
