Mary Grilz
July 28, 1950 – April 12, 2016

Mary Grilz (nee Tobin), 65 years, of St. Benedict, SK passed away on April 12, 2016 at St. Paul’s Hospital due to complications from COPD and esophagus cancer.  Mary, the oldest daughter of Wilhelmina (Mina) and Arnold Tobin was born on July 28, 1950 at Humboldt.  She attended St. Benedict School for grades 1 & 2, Cranberry School for grade 3 and then back to St. Benedict.  Along with her sister Marjorie, Mary attended St. Ursula’s Academy for Grades 9 to 12.  She went to the University of Saskatchewan and obtained her teaching certificate, and then taught for two years.  Mary married Leon Grilz on August 5, 1972.  They lived away for a couple of years and then returned to St. Benedict, where Leon joined his dad in his trenching business and farming.  In 1979, they bought Mary’s parents farm.  Here they raised their family of three – Renny born January 15, 1975, Demonda born December 12, 1976 and Coralee born November 21, 1983.  Mary was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom; one who always found other things to do…town secretary from 1974 – 1979, substitute teacher, tutor, home schooler, farm wife with all of the jobs that go with a huge garden and yard.  She was a crafts person with many interests, a volunteer, a rug and quilt maker, sewing machine operator, active member of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, family historian and a major player in the making of the St. Benedict history book.  Mary was proud of the accomplishments of all of her children as they left home, attended further education and began their careers.  She was especially thrilled to welcome each of her grandchildren – Salix born December 20, 2002, Jonathan born February 9, 2005, Linnaea born October 16, 2006 and Danica born March 7, 2008. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of Coralee’s son in June.  Mary was saddened with the death of her granddaughter, Robyn.  Since 2000, Mary’s health had deteriorated with COPD, brain aneurysm/stroke and Influenza A.  Although this meant her energy levels were low, she continued to do as much as she could and to find joy in her life with her wonderful husband, caring children and grandchildren.  Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 43 years, Leon Grilz of St. Benedict, their three children and four grandchildren:  Renny (Lisa) Grilz and children Salix, Jonathan, and Linnaea of Aberdeen; Demonda (Dean) Evanisky and daughter Danica of Handel; and Coralee Grilz (Eric Tetteh) and expected son of Lethbridge; one brother and two sisters:  Terry (Shirley) Tobin of Kelowna, BC, Marjorie Tobin of Canada/England; and Rosalie (Larry) Benning of Watrous; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, Arnold and Mina Tobin; granddaughter, Robyn Evanisky; and brother, Charles Tobin.  The Prayer Service for Mary was held on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.  Both services were held at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, St. Benedict, officiated by Fr. Colin Roy. Interment followed in the Parish Cemetery.  Memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be directed to Kinsmen Telemiracle or St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church Cemetery Fund.
