Margaret Leffler
November 23, 1917 – March 23, 2017

The peaceful death of Mrs. Margaret Leffler (nee Friesen), 99 years of Central Parkland Lodge, Lanigan, occurred with her family by her side on Thursday, March 23, 2017.  Margaret was born on November 23, 1917 to Peter and Maria (nee Funk) Friesen in the village of Jgaden, in the province of Siberia, Russia.  She was the 13th child born to the family.  Along with her parents and six of her siblings, at the age of 9, she immigrated to Canada. After docking in Quebec, they traveled west by freight train, settling in the Drake district in the fall of 1926.  She attended Poplar Hill School, along with her siblings.  Margaret met her husband to be, Henry Leffler, when she was taking lunch out to the field for the thrashing crew.  Following a time of courtship, on November 14, 1941, they were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanigan.  They farmed west of Lanigan for a number of years and then in 1947, they purchased land south east of Jansen.  She worked alongside Henry in operating their farm, as well as caring for their six children.  She grew a large garden, processed meat and vegetables, baked many loaves of bread, made homemade soap; all the necessities of the day.  In 1968, they sold the farm and moved in to Jansen.  On March 4, 1981, Henry passed away.  Margaret continued to live in Jansen.  She worked hard as the caretaker for Zion Lutheran Church, the RM of Prairie Rose Office, Community Hall as well as house cleaning, babysitting, painting and for many years, cleaning ducks and geese for local and American hunters.  Margaret was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the Community Club for many years.  She was able to travel some with family and friends, including a trip to BC, trips to Alberta and Colorado for family reunions, Minot, ND, and a few camping trips.  In the fall of 2004, Margaret moved to Jubilee Homes in Lanigan.  She still grew a garden and loved all kinds of beautiful flowers.  For the past four years, Margaret had been a resident at Central Parkland Lodge.   Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her four children and 19 grandchildren:  GEORGE (Gwen) Leffler of Lanigan and family Jason (Nicole) Leffler, and Kimberlee (Brad) Huculak, all of Lanigan, Mark (Tanya) Funk of Clavet, Murray (Bev) Funk of Lanigan, Jessica (Garry) Solar of Saskatoon, and Chris (Stephanie) Solar of Watrous; BRENDA (Gordon) Gusikoski of Viscount and family Craig Gusikoski (Tara Ford) of Estevan, Brent (Michelle) Gusikoski of Bienfait, Shawn Gusikoski (Mallory Esau) of Saskatoon, and Dustin Gusikoski (Shauna Elliott) of Viscount; DON Leffler of Wynyard and family Kelsey Leffler (Erin Phillips), Kendra Leffler, and Brett (Marissa) Leffler, all of Saskatoon; MERVIN (Sheila) Leffler of Lanigan and family Derek Leffler (Amanda Medvid), and Jennifer (Adam) Lenyk, all of Saskatoon; Isabel’s family Erwin Krieger of Jansen and Les (Tracy) Krieger of Saskatoon; and Larry’s family Eileen Leffler of Viscount and family Cory (Michelle) Leffler of Saskatoon, Trent (Kara) Leffler of Saskatoon, and Marty (Rychelle) Leffler of Viscount; sister-in-law Evelyn Friesen of Drake, and numerous great grandchildren and nephew and nieces.  She was predeceased by her parents Peter and Maria Friesen; husband Henry Leffler; daughter Isabel Krieger; son Larry Leffler; grandchildren Travis Leffler, Trina Leffler, Marie Leffler, and Robyn Gusikoski; and all of her siblings, nine sisters and three brothers.  The Funeral Service for Margaret was held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Jansen officiated by Pastor Glenn Shore.  Interment followed in the Jansen Cemetery.  Memorial Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Jansen Cemetery.
