John Svab
March 15, 1917 – February 10, 2017

John Svab was born on March 15, 1917 to John and Anna (nee Takacs) Svab Sr., the second of eight children. He went to Lake Ignace School at six years of age until Grade 8. John worked on his dad’s farm and volunteered with the RCAF in 1941. In 1944 John graduated as a pilot officer and moved up to the rank of WAG (Wireless Air Gunner). He flew in a transport plane delivering supplies to the allies and civilian victims of war in Greece, inside the Arctic Circle, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, Russia and Germany. John also transported survivors of the Nazi Concentration Camp, Belsen Bergen in Germany. ① In 1946 John came home, he met Hilda July 1st at the Middle Lake Sports Day. ② John and Hilda were married on November 18, 1946. In 1947 they bought their farm at Little Moose Lake, and farmed there for five years. ③ In 1952 they moved to the Svab homestead, where Linda and Ann were born. In 1959 they moved to Middle Lake and John worked as Postmaster for 22 years. In 1998, they moved to Humboldt. In 2004 they moved into Birch Manor where John resided for 13 years. ④ John is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Linda Gardner and Ann (Gene) Brockman; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: William and Louis Svab. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna (nee Takacs) Svab Sr.; his wife Hilda (nee Kirchner) Svab; his sisters: Sylvia, Mary and Anne; and his brothers: Charlie and Joe.

A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Middle Lake, SK at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part were: Bob Gardner, crossbearer; Amy Pearson and Krista Gardner, scripture readers; Ann Brockman, intentions; Bob Gardner, giftbearer; Jessi Brockman, memorial table attendant; and Linda Gardner, urnbearer. Music ministry was provided by Rhonda Baker as organist and members of the Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church Choir. The eulogy was delivered by Linda Gardner. Interment will be take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK.
