Douglas Martin Engen
February 16, 1949 – August 4, 2017

It is with heavy hearts the family of Doug Engen wish to announce his passing on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK.  He was 68 years of age.  Doug was born on February 16, 1949, to Melvin and Edna (nee Hammond) Engen in Perdue, SK.  Sadly, his mother passed away that day.  After his birth, his father moved to Kinistino, SK, to raise him with the assistance of Doug’s aunts and grandparents.  Soon after, his father married Gertrude Weise from Manitoba.  The family then made their home on a farm south of Carrot River, SK.  There, Doug lived with an older sister, Judi, and eventually a younger sister, Valerie, thus completing the family unit.  Doug attended school in Carrot River and after graduating from Grade 12, began his career at Alwinsal Potash Mine (now PCS – Lanigan Division).  He took two apprenticeships and secured his inter-provincial papers in both industrial mechanics and electrical, the latter being his choice of profession.  On January 30, 1970, Doug married Marj Bartel in Knox United Church, Lanigan.  Following their marriage, they lived in Humboldt briefly, and then moved to Lanigan.  Their union was blessed with two children, a daughter and a son.  In 2008, Doug and Marj moved back to Humboldt, where they continued to live.  He retired from PCS Lanigan in 2014. Over the years, Doug was very community-minded and also very involved in sports, coaching minor hockey and umpiring baseball all over the province.  Doug is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marj (nee Bartel) Engen; daughter, Lori Webb; son, Duane Engen; granddaughters:  Gabrielle Webb and Ella Engen; grandson, Ashton Gurski;  two sisters:  Judi (Keith) Edwards, and Valerie (Russell) Dempster; brothers-in-law:  Ken (June) Bartel, Ron Bartel, Frank Bartel, Mervin Bartel, and Charlie (Linda) Bartel; sisters-in-law:  Kit (Dalton) Gagne and Betty (Kevin) Powell; and by numerous nieces and nephews with whom he had a special relationship.  Doug was predeceased by his birth mother, Edna (nee Hammond) Engen (February 16, 1949); father, Melvin Engen (December 23, 2009); step-mother, Gertrude Engen (May 9, 2012); father-in-law, Jacob Bartel (November 29, 2006); mother-in-law, Annie Bartel (May 9, 1983); two sisters-in-law:  Sandra Skorlatowski (October 16, 2007), and Janice Bartel (October 30, 2011); and by his nephew, Robbie Burns (May 17, 2005).  The Funeral Service was held at Westminster United Church on Thursday, August 11, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Brenda Curtis.  Others taking part were:  Joan Jackson, organist; Gabby Webb and Ella Engen, scripture readers; Gabby Webb, tribute to Grandpa; Allan Webb, special reflection; Ron Bartel, eulogist; Karen Newberry, power point and music co-ordinator; Tracey Stoochnoff and Betty Bartel, memorial table attendants; and Don Chisholm, urnbearer.  Interment followed at Humboldt Public Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be directed to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada (600 – 60 St. Clair Avenue East, Toronto, ON, M4T 1N5), Pancreatic Cancer Canada (Suite 3500, 2 Bloor Street East, Toronto, ON, M4W 1A8) or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation Spiritual Care Endowment Fund (P.O.
