Broncos lose their first home game of the season falling 5-3 to the Terriers
The Humboldt Broncos suffered their first loss at the Elgar Petersen Arena of the 2025-26 season, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Yorkton Terriers on Friday night. Turnovers and odd man rushes were a large part of the Broncos undoing. The lone goal in the opening period was a result of the Terriers capitalizing on an odd man break as Brett Buckley scored his first goal of the year. Jacob Strizzi tied the game early in the second period with a back-handed shot that found the top portion of the net. Strizzi extended his goal streak to four games and remains on top of the league leaders with seven goals on the year. The tie score was short-lived, as 1:08 later, Yorkton regained the lead as William Leonard’s shot fooled Broncos netminder Nick Kotai and snuck into the back of the net, restoring the Terriers advantage. Shortly after the Broncos were unable to capitalize on an odd man situation, Kale Johns scored his first goal on a two on one rush, giving Yorkton a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Humboldt didn’t go down without a fight in the third period. Kristian Lacelle scored his third goal of the year to cut the deficit to a 3-2. Zachary Hertz’s point shot gave the Terriers a 4-2 lead but 31 seconds later, Brayden Skogstad scored his first goal of the year, using Tyce Penrod as a decoy and sneaking a shot past Yorkton’s Callum Craig. That was as close as the Broncos would get, as Johns scored his second goal of the game with an empty netter to make the final 5-3. Kotai ended up making 36 saves in the loss for Humboldt, while Craig turned aside 38 shots for Yorkton. Defenceman Tyrone Sobry made his Broncos debut after being reassigned to the Prince Albert Raiders on Thursday. On the power play, Humboldt was 0 for 7 while Yorkton was 1 for 4. With Friday night’s setback, the Broncos record drops to 5-2-0-0 on the season. It won’t be a long wait for the green and the gold to get revenge on the Terriers as the two teams will meet in Yorkton on Saturday night.
