A couple of misplaced rocks was the difference for the mixed doubles curling duo of Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres in the final of the Aly Jenkins Memorial this weekend, hosted by the Sutherland Curling Club in Saskatoon. The Walker/Muyres duo came up against Nancy Martin, former teammate of Aly Jenkins, who died suddenly in October 2019, and BC partner Tyrell Griffith. Walker and Muyres had gone undefeated in their round robin pool before advancing to the final, beating the likes of Rachel Homan and Brad Jacobs and Olympic medalists, Perret/Rios of Switzerland.

Walker/Muyres started strong, taking points in the first and second ends. In the third, a missed freeze allowed Nancy Martin to score four and take a two point lead. Walker and Muyres capitalized on their trademark patience and solid rock placement to rebuild a lead, taking one point in the fourth and stealing in the fifth and sixth.

It was another miss in the seventh that spelled disaster as Martin was left with an open hit to score another four ender and wrap up the championship with an  8-5 final.

The Aly Jenkins Memorial was the second in a series of 5 Mixed Doubles Grand Slam events, poised to elevate the sport and capture new audiences.
