The evacuation for the village of Guernsey has been lifted.

Fires at the site are now fully contained. Crews continue to work on-site to ensure all equipment is removed and the area fully restored.

The rail line was re-opened this evening once all track repairs and safety inspections were completed.

Highway 16 remains closed due to the derailment.

In an updated statement, CP Rail has confirmed that 32 cars containing crude oil were involved in the derailment just outside Guernsey. They confirmed that no injuries were sustained in the incident.

The fire from the tankers continues to burn. Humboldt Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica stated that they were one step closer to bringing the fire under control. However, because of the continuing smoke and concerns about the wind direction shifting, the mandatory evacuation order for Guernsey remained in place. Approximately 85 residents have been asked to relocate.

CP stated that its crews are engaged with fire departments to extinguish the fires and that they were also working diligently to clean up the area. The company stated that no groundwater would be affected. There were no estimates as to how much product had been spilled in this incident.

The investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing.
