It was a field of some of the best curlers Saskatchewan and the prairies had to offer at the Farmers Edge Sask Curling Tour in Wadena. In the end, it was Saskatchewan’s Shaun Meachem rink who came out on top with a game-saving shot over Scotland’s Glen Muirhead.

Meachem had been in control through much of the games but found himself in some trouble in the final end as Muirhead had positioned three counters. Meachem maneuvered a tricky freeze shot around a guard to lock out Muirhead’s late-game charge and come away with the championship. Meachem’s team comprised of Shaun Meachem, Brady Scharback, Brayden Stewart, and Jared Latos, playing out of the Swift Current Curling Club, took home the $5,000 first-place prize.

The title also came with a berth to the SaskTel Tankard from January 29 - February 2 in Melville. Since Meachem had his entry into the Tankard locked up previously and the second-place team from Perth, Scotland was ineligible, it left the door open to the third-place team. Team Deis curling out of Fox Valley won that third-place finish and the berth with a victory over Team Armstrong.

Like the Meachem squad, Team Deis has previous Tankard and Brier experience with the likes of Ryan Deis, Scott Manners, Jason Barnhart, Kalin Deis, and a familiar face in their coach Kay Montgomery.

The week leading up to the major event saw Glen Muirhead and his crew enjoying the sights and sounds of the prairies and the hospitality of the people of Wadena. In addition to new experiences like bison and moose sighting, the Scots, Glen Muirhead, Kyle Smith, Thomas Muirhead, and Cammy Smith,  played friendlies, practiced, and provided clinics for some of the local junior curlers.

A spiel of this size is dependent on the support of the volunteers, the ice-makers, and the entire community. Wadena was treated to a curling event of the highest calibre and proudly looks forward to another Farmers’ Edge competition next year.
