Summer is upon us and that means the return of the TD Summer Reading Club at the Reid Thompson Library. Registration night is on Wednesday, June 26 at 7:00 pm at the Library.

Along with the book log which helps young readers track their reading experiences throughout the summer, guests will be stopping by with fun learning activities and gear to entertain and invite readers to dig further.

Branch Librarian Michael Langhorst sets up the kickoff with the registration evening, "During the registration night, anyone who wishes to participate in the Summer Reading Program can come in to do so, but they don't have to register to participate. It's free for everyone and open to about age 14. The program wraps up on August 20 with the windup party. Log books are due in on August 19." The individual logging the most read books wins a prize.

The Book Club is always a popular feature with library staff hosting the weekly gathering. Some of this summer's programming revolves around the theme of STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. STEAM Storytime with Kate is first up on July 2 followed by a visit Cubelets and Code-a-Pillar on July 8, which will orient young people to computers and elementary coding, the language of computers.

Ozobots are part of the fun on July 22. The mini-robots that visually track and follow marks on a piece of paper are sure to be a hit with the tech crowd. Craft with Crystal follows on June 29th along with a visit from the Humboldt Fire Department of July 31 to discuss fire safety and demonstrate some of their firefighting and rescue equipment.

Duct tape, that amazing "fix-all" tool popularized by Red Green, will take centre stage during Duct Tape Fun on August 12. As a special bonus for the windup, Langhorst has just received a commitment from a Saskatoon group to bring out some cold-blooded critters for young people to enjoy as part of the wind-up.

"They're bringing along turtles and other types of reptiles," says Langhorst.

The TD Summer Reading Club is a joint initiative with the Toronto Public Library, Libraries and Archives Canada, and TD Bank Financial Group in addition to numerous local sponsors. Check with the Reid Thompson Library to determine which events require registration due to limited space.
