Tanner Gerwing scored his first of three touchdowns on the opening drive, as the HCI Mohawks defeated the Tisdale Tornados 51-14 at Glenn Hall Park on Friday.

It was the fourth straight game that the Mohawks got up early after a touchdown on their opening possession.

Tisdale quickly tied the game at 7-7 on a touchdown from Cole Gisi following a 50 yard completion to Gregory Brett.

In the second quarter, Morgan Gobeil and Gerwing had touchdowns, with Gisi answering for Tisdale.

That gave the Mohawks a narrow 21-14 lead at the break.

Humboldt went to the ground game for the majority of the second half, which featured a pair of touchdowns from running back Jacob Zimroz, who said toughness in the second half paved the way to victory.

"We as a team just needed to play tougher than the other team. A lot of the guys stepped up, so that's what happens."

Zimroz's second touchdown was aided by cornerback Braeden Crooks, who intercepted a pass and returned it to the Tisdale one yard line.

Gerwing would add his third touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Mohawks a 42-14 lead. Tyson Hergott closed out the scoring with a fourth quarter major.

With six of the seven Mohawks touchdowns coming by way of the running game, Zimroz said that's a big credit to blocking, especially from the big boys upfront.

"It was nice to run the ball, and I give a lot of credit to the O-line. Can't do much without them out there."

Zimroz was also complimentary of the team's coaching staff, who he says put the team in the best situations possible thanks to their collective effort and hardwork.

"It's really great. All the coaches work well together to do what's best for the team, and it usually works out in the end."

Friday's game was the regular season finale for the Mohawks at home. Potential home playoff games are yet to be determined.

The Mohawks wrap up the regular season on the road. They're on a short week against Nipawin on Thursday, before a week off to prepare for the defending 3A provincial champion Melfort Comets on October 23.
