Humboldt Co-op and Rona Humboldt Lumber Mart teamed up to provide the four Humboldt schools with a boost to their nutrition programs. Research clearly shows the connection between learning and proper nutrition. However, nutrition programs in schools have costs and that’s where donations like those from Rona and Co-op are critical in sustaining those programs.

The businesses donated $1000 with $250 going to each of the four schools.

Brent Walker of the Humboldt Co-op and Evan Pronych from Rona made stops at each school for a brief presentation. Walker notes this is not the first time for the donations.

“It’s something that we did last year and we wanted to do it again this year. It’s a good cause and it helps the schools out.”

One of those presentations went to St. Dominic School where principal Cal Theisen gratefully accepted the funds. Theisen explained that the dollars would be put to good use.

“We find that community partners have been really generous especially with our nutrition program.”

While programs may differ slightly in the way they deliver the food, it’s always a nutritional boost at breakfast or some appropriate point in the day. Theisen explained how their system works at St. Augustine School.

“We run a snack program here, so that would usually be halfway through the morning and sometimes in the afternoon if needed. We provide snacks for students but we also provide meals for students who happen to forget their lunch or who sometimes simply don’t have lunch for one reason or another. If kids are going to get through the day, they need something to eat.”

All of the schools appreciate the contributions of businesses and partners to keep these important programs running.
