As kids get set to hit the streets of Humboldt for their annual haul of candy, ensuring their safety is also something to prepare for the day.

Safe Communities Humboldt and Area has some tips for trick or treaters this Halloween.

"Children should definitely dress for the weather. We're heading into a couple days of cooler weather, so make sure they are dressed warm," explained Executive Director Shari Hinz. "Also ensure they are visible. Reflective clothing if possible. Carrying a flashlight if you are heading into a street that isn't lit as well as you would like them to be."

Hinz says that the younger generation should have someone along with them, be it an adult, or older, more responsible child.

"Just because they don't always have the ability to judge and see the vehicles approaching," she noted. "Make sure they are crossing at the crosswalks, stopping at the curbs, looking left and right and watching for oncoming traffic."

Once the kids have had their fun on the streets, there should also be a walkthrough of their candy, according to Hinz.

"While you're trick or treating, resist the urge to have candy along the way, and make sure that no candy is consumed until they return home and the contents can be inspected thoroughly by an adult."
