Trains and rail lines have been a hot topic so far in 2020.

However, on February 27th at Humboldt Collegiate Institute, students in grades nine through twelve focused on the importance of railway safety with Safe Communities Humboldt. CN rail police were also on hand to conduct the presentation for students and adults alike.

"It was a really great morning with students and administrative staff all saying they learned something new or useful," said Shari Hinz, executive director of Safe Communities Humboldt.

The clinic covered many important topics such as obeying signs around a railway crossing, to never try to beat a train, derailment safety and making the youngsters aware of dangers to watch for. With the size and weight of a train, combined with safety guidelines not being followed, it can end in disaster.

"Those vehicles that we have crossing through our community multiple times a day, it's just really important to have that extra level of information," added Hinz.

Due to some students being new drivers and having the confidence to walk home, the clinic taught safety methods for both behind the wheel and on foot.

"The speed at of a train can be deceiving so they know to never try to beat a train past the tracks. Also if you're a student with headphones in it might be difficult to hear them and it could be too late before you realize."

Safe Communities Humboldt does plan to bring back the clinic closer to Rail Safety Week next fall.
