The Roughriders quarterback controversy has just became more controversial. It was announced on January 3 the Riders had acquired Quarterback Zach Collaros in a trade from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in exchange for the tenth overall pick in the upcoming CFL draft.

I like this move - but it could also bring complications.

Collaros is a six-year veteran in the CFL throwing for 13,759 yards with 83 touchdown passes and 38 interceptions with Toronto and Hamilton so far in his career. Yes, Collaros is a little injury prone but the Riders brought back Brandon Bridge on a one-year deal back on December 20th and he performed well as a backup. So, if Collaros goes down Bridge can work his magic.

It'll be interesting now to see if coach Chris Jones will keep the two-quarterback system he had last year with Bridge and Kevin Glenn or if he'll name either one the starter. Both guys are capable CFL starting quarterbacks so it'll be an interesting competition when training camp opens in Saskatoon in May.

This could also bring some complications to things. In football sometimes, when you have two quarterbacks who can be starters egos can get in the way and the two guys are fighting over who should start and everything just falls apart from there. However. I don't think that'll be a problem especially with the two-quarterback system Jones runs. Also, I think Bridge will like to learn from another veteran in Collaros just like he did last year with Glenn.

I think Hamilton made this move to free up space to sign Johnny Manziel. Collaros had a big contract that Hamilton needed to move if they were going to bring Manziel.

Manziel is a former first-round draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns and a former Heisman Trophy Winner as the top Quarterback in U.S. College Football whose controversial off the field antics and immaturity more than likely cost him a job in the NFL.

Hamilton appears to feel Manziel could be suited to the Canadian game and there are reports that Manziel is more focused on football now than he was when he was in the NFL..

A day after the deal, the Riders cut Kevin Glenn. Glenn had one year left on the deal and being a 39-year-old QB in a league like the CFL can be very tough on the body. Plus, we saw how Glenn struggled late into last year with Bridge stepping in to win some games.

Glenn has been with every organization except for Edmonton so I hope that Glenn gets picked up by the Eskimos so that he can complete the cycle. If not, and he decides to retire I hope that the Riders bring him back in a coaching position.

The Riders offseason has been an interesting one thus far and with the acquistion of Collaros I really like their chances of winning the Grey Cup in 2018. It'll be exciting to see what comes next.
