With temperatures inching toward that spring and summer feel, the Humboldt Campground, administered by the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce will soon be open for another season.

This year will hopefully see a longer camping season than afforded to visitors last year. Anne Thomas, Chair of the Visitor Information Centre and Campground (VIC) Committee, explains the challenges faced by an unfavourable and short camping season.

In her reports, Thomas notes that "despite the many improvements implemented throughout 2018, The Visitor Information Centre and campground experienced a decline in overall profitability, largely as a result of the weather." The early onset of winter shortened the camping season by about a month.

Thomas explained, "Last year was kind of an exception. The previous year, the weather was ideal all year long, and so we had highway crews staying in the campground well into October. This past year, the season was shorter because of the weather so we did experience a decline in campground revenues."

Undaunted, the campground will open with a new information sign sponsored by local businesses and a few new initiatives. Campers will be able to reserve their spaces with Camp Reservations Canada, a convenient and user-friendly online booking tool. Thomas lists some other happenings, "We are planning for continual maintenance like we usually do on some of the golf holes on the mini golf. Also, the washrooms will be painted to make them nice and fresh. And we're also looking at the number of staff we have to try to increase efficiency."

The campground will be open for visitors in May.
