Saskatchewan's new Lieutenant-Governor is Russell Mirasty, a retired veteran of the RCMP who held the posts of Director General of National Aboriginal Policing Services and as Commanding Officer of “F” Division (Saskatchewan). A tireless advocate for improvements to education systems, Mr. Mirasty is a member of the Lac La Ronge First Nation, who currently resides in Lac La Ronge.

His appointments included memberships to the  League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents and board membership on the Community Safety Knowledge Alliance. He was honoured with the Meritorious Service Medal in 2017 for his varied accomplishments.

As part of the press release, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the new appointee as a relationship builder.

The Prime Minister stated, "Mr. Mirasty is an outstanding leader who paved the way for Indigenous peoples in the national police force. As Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, I know he will continue to make a difference for the people of his province and all Canadians, and inspire others to create change in their communities.”

Russell Mirasty's appointment follows that of the former Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable W. Thomas Molloy, who passed away earlier this month after a battle with cancer.
