Strong goals have been set for a 13-year-old Humboldt resident entering a strongman competition in Regina.

Mason Bunko will be heading to Regina for the Adrenaline Rookie Rumble Strongman Competition on May 5th.

"It just started with me coming to the gym. It's almost like an addiction. After you do your set for 10 or 20 or 30, you feel like you can conquer the world," said Bunko

This is the first year the competition will implement a youth category into the mix and will feature aspiring weightlifters age 15 and younger.

The competition consists of three disciplines. A press medley with increasing weight intervals of 30, 50, 55, and 65lbs. A 100ft farmers walk carrying 85lbs, and finally, a loading medley again with increasing weights of 40, 50, 70, and 80lbs.

"The press medley is by far my favourite, I just love taking the bar, lifting it over my head, and feeling that level of accomplishment."

Bunko has only been training for the competition for around a month, but his trainer Christine Cardenas has seen steady growth and a great passion for the sport.

"The first few days we were working on some barbell overhead presses, and he was having a bit of a struggle. A week later he was pushing it up no problem. He's a strong kid and seemed like the type that would enjoy the competition," said Cardenas.

Although he will compete for first, Bunko's just as happy to test himself and take part in the event.

"At the competition, even if you don't come in any place, you still have that pride that you stepped up to the plate and did it. Im expecting the best of the best, its provincials and even if I don't place, im competing."
