The Liberty Rink, once a hub of activity for the small community on Highway 2 south of Watrous, burned to the ground late Saturday night. Known as the Beaverdome, the iconic structure had been closed to the public because of structural faults since 2019. There were no reports of injury as crews responded.

The building is close to the water treatment plant that serves the village of 50 or so residents. Fire crews concentrated efforts on saving that structure. While there was exterior damage, the plant was saved. Fire crews from Imperial, Holdfast and Davidson were called in to support the Liberty crew.

Mayor Jennifer Langlois said that it’s unlikely the structure would be replaced. Much of the rink activity has shifted to nearby Imperial.
