Humboldt Collegiate Institute teacher Jamie White is a mother of three, a tireless community volunteer, and a boundless source of compassion and caring for all she connects with. Now, her colleagues and students at HCI, along with family and friends, are rallying around Jamie as she heads into a battle with cancer. Dubbed “Mrs. White’s Fight”, her HCI family has established a fundraising day to help offset costs of travel and accommodation during her treatment regimen. That special day, with a trio of events scheduled,  is Sunday, October 23.

After two years of appointments and referrals, White was diagnosed with Aggressive B Cell Lymphoma in August. She’s begun her first round of chemo treatments. White has been a teacher for 23 years, the last 15 as a key staff member at HCI.

“We have kind of a trifecta of events happening at HCI on October 23,” explains colleague and co-organizer Kerri Archibald. “The first is a co-ed volleyball tournament where the entry fees will go to the White family and the prizes the top two teams will receive. It’s a co-ed tournament; there has to be two members of the opposite gender on the court.”

Entry fee is $20 per adult and $10 for students Grade 12 and under.

The day also includes a silent auction happening in the commons area throughout the day. Organizers are canvassing local businesses and asking individuals for donations. The public is invited to attend the silent auction and browse what’s sure to be a wide range of items and crafts. A Facebook group will also post the donations for your digital browsing pleasure.

Lastly, a garage sale will be going on with the event, and there’s two ways for donors to participate.

“People can either come to donate items to HCI to be sold at the garage sale,” Archibald says, “Or if they want to earn their own money from the garage sale, then we’re selling tables at $10, $20 and $30 each based on the size. Those proceeds will go to the White family. We’re hoping to have a whole bunch of people in our building, either playing volleyball, bidding on items, or shopping the garage sale. We hope to see a lot of community support out there to help our beloved co-worker, Jamie White.”

Garage sale table prices are $15 for one table, $25 for two, and $30 for three.

Items for the silent auction or garage sale can be dropped off at HCI during opening hours. To make arrangements regarding the garage sale, conatct Heidi Phillips at (306) 682-1010. For silent auction donations or volleyball entries, contact Kerri Archibald at (306) 230-1935 or Ashley Leptizki at (306) 233-8005.

It will be an action packed day at HCI on October 23, all in support of an individual who has given much to her students, family and community.
