We wrap up our series on this year’s HCAA Recognition Award recipients with another deserving duo. Eight area teachers, coaches and volunteers were given the awards in appreciation of their commitment to student athletics in high school sporting endeavours. The awards were handed out at the Annual General Meeting and Luncheon of the Horizon Central Athletic Association.

David Millette (Humboldt Collegiate Institute)

David Millette started his teaching career in 2007 at Holy Rosary School in Lloydminster. He moved to Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) in 2009. He was the vice-principal at HCI from 2016-2022 and took over as principal in 2022.

David has coached junior, JV, and senior boys volleyball at HCI as well as senior badminton since arriving at HCI fifteen years ago. In the community, he has also coached softball, soccer, baseball, and hockey. He has also volunteered as a board member for Marian gymnastics club in Saskatoon and is an active volunteer at St. Augustine Parish. David is also part of the organizational team for Humboldt Independent Travel Club, which has taken students to Europe several times.

David has been at the helm of the boys volleyball program since his arrival at HCI, highlighted by winning 4A Boys Volleyball Provincial Championship in 2017. David was the head coach, commissioner, and host of that event.

HCI is very lucky to have David Millette at the helm, as he strongly supports and plays an active role in the extracurricular programming. His volunteerism goes beyond the walls of HCI and throughout the community of Humboldt as well.

Haley Wagar (Lanigan Central High School)

Haley Wagar has been teaching at Lanigan Central High School (LCHS) for the past 4 years. In this short time, she has made a significant impact, taking on many extra roles in the school and in the community.

Haley has been the head coach of the LCHS senior girls volleyball program for the past 3 seasons, making it to Provincials all three seasons, and bringing home two SHSAA 3A Girls Volleyball Provincial gold medals.

Haley also coaches junior boys basketball, where her team recently captured the title of HCAA District Champions.

Outside of school, Haley is also the head coach of the Huskie 18U Elite club volleyball team.

Haley is a great role model to her student athletes. She exudes all the qualities of a strong female leader and builds confidence and pride in every student she spends time with.
