Culture Days are designed to reflect the array of backgrounds, beliefs, languages, and arts that make up the mosaic of Canada. In Humboldt, the Humboldt and District Museum and Gallery joins its Canadian counterpart in a 10th-anniversary celebration of the cultural variety in the city and in the region.

Mayor Rob Muench proclaimed September 28 and 29 to be Culture Days in Humboldt. The proclamation was signed at the City Council Meeting on September 23. Culture Days in Humboldt will be celebrated in conjunction with the Fall Trade Show being held at the Humboldt Uniplex Curling Rink on the weekend. Museum Supervisor Jean Price is excited about the lineup of activities slated for the two-day celebration.

“Saturday from 10 to 4, we’ve got cultural arts from the Humboldt and District Newcomers Centre. So you can come by and try Mauritian painting, learn a bit more about Chinese culture and writing, and meet several other groups.”

One of the Saturday highlights is a community art project entitled “Trees For Humboldt.” The participation project is about putting art into everyday life. In just a few seconds, participants can be part of the creation of a forest, and for those who have a bit more time, community artists can embellish the trees in the forest.

The excitement continues on Sunday says Price.

“We have some henna artists coming. The artist from Humboldt Ink, the tattoo studio, and another of our local artists will be there doing free henna tattoos. We have demonstrations and opportunities to try out pysanky decorating to produce beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs.”

Price also says there will be a heavy-metal component to the event with local metal machine artists coming in to display their works.

The idea of placing the Culture Days events in booths at the Trade Show allows for greater accessibility and hopefully more participation from the public. Because the philosophy of Culture Days is for people to be active explorers as opposed to passive observers, the space at the Uniplex affords a greater opportunity for people to jump into a new experience like painting or metal fabrication.

Price explains, “We’ve tried to arrange it where people can come out and try things themselves in a really low-pressure and fun way.”

Sask Culture is a major sponsor for Sask Culture Days bringing art to the world of commerce at the Humboldt Fall Trade Show.
