It may look like a twisted tangle of spikes and spokes, but it’s all going to translate to money for the Muenster Community Hall. In the late summer, a scrap metal drive began with the goal of collecting as many tons of metal refuse as possible. As the November 10 deadline for deposits nears, the pile continues to grow.

The fundraiser is to provide for a wheelchair lift for the Community Hall. The split level building has a stage and seating for entertainment on the upper level and banquet facilities on the lower level. An ageing exterior ramp serves the upstairs and there is no wheelchair accessibility to the bottom floor. The purchase and installation of the lifts will be in the neighbourhood of $40,000 - $50,000.

Miles Jorgenson with the Community Hall board has facilitated the collection which is housed on his farm north of Muenster. Jorgenson is pleased with the drive thus far.

“Since August, I’ve made quite a few visits to locals, got the word out through DiscoverHumboldt.com and the radio station, so we’ve had donations coming in from far and wide. It’s been going extremely well.”

Jorgenson’s target is 600 - 700 tons of metal, and thanks to his efforts and those of local and regional donors, he estimates he is approximately halfway to that goal. He is hoping that his target goal would fully fund the lift system.

People can contact Jorgenson directly, preferably via text at (306) 231-6061, for directions to drop off unwanted metal. He reminds prospective donors of what is acceptable.

“We are collecting general scrap metal, large appliances, vehicles, batteries, and farm machinery.”

Jorgenson also notes that the scrap merchant will also do yard cleanups and on-site assessments leaving the yard in a clean state.

There is still time for donors to rid themselves of unwanted scrap metal for a great cause; the drive wraps up on November 10.
