City officials are taking the opportunity to remind citizens that garage sale signs in the city of Humboldt are regulated. Placement of signs along the boulevard and city property is prohibited.

While it's not the intent of signs to cause a distraction, they often do. Features like balloons, streamers, and bright colours, designed to catch the eye, serve their purpose to divert a driver's attention from the road. More than that, drivers will often create congestion near the intersections where signs are posted. City Communications Manager Penny Lee explains, "At those busy intersections, what we've witnessed is that vehicles have actually stopped. It causes a great deal of danger to those passing by and to those who have stopped and are maybe getting out of their vehicles."

In order to mitigate the danger, the city commissioned a pair of billboards for community posting. One is located at the Co-op Food Store and the other is at the Co-op C-Store on the city's east side.

Lee says, "The Co-op came forward to donate the locations and a portion of the costs of the signs, and then our staff put the signs up. They are a decent size, so there's more than enough room for everyone to post their garage sales."

She goes on to say it's also the perfect location to post about community events, barbecues, or lost pets. That way people can look for sales and events in a leisurely, and more importantly, safe fashion.
