An annual mental health awareness campaign is set to once again reach out to those suffering from mental illness through the use of social media.

January 25th is Bell Let's Talk day, where for every phone call or text using a Bell smartphone, or every Facebook or Twitter post using the hashtag "Bell Let's Talk", Bell Canada will donate five cents towards mental health initiatives.

Craig Hilsendager is the Community Health Nurse for Humboldt.

He describes what Bell Let's Talk Day is all about.

"It's a way to get the message out about Mental Health and for people to open up about their problems. Through the media, this is a good way of doing it."

Hilsendager says the use of Social Media for this campaign makes a lot of sense.

"Studies have shown that the media and the entertainment industry play a role in shaping people's opinions about mental health. As a result, there's more and more people open to sharing their problems and issues."

Hilsendager explains although we've come a long way, there is still a long way to go.

"I guess we can always improve on the way we get the message across to people. More education through the media, through the workplace, through the education, like schools. I believe in the last 10 years we have seen an improvement in this area so that's a good thing."

On a National scale last year, Bell was able to donate 6.1 Million dollars to Mental Health initiatives for Bell Let's talk day.
