It's that time of year when locals start to hit the water.

However, there is a lot of preparation and cleaning that needs to be done on a boat before doing so. The Humboldt Wildlife Federation is reminding boat riders to clean their watercraft before hopping on the water.

"The biggest thing is that invasive species can be transported in boating equipment. Especially if boats come from a different lake, it's imperative that it's taken care of," said Matt Shidlowsky, president of the Humboldt Wildlife Federation.

Organisms such as zebra mussels can be attached to a boat and infect the water. From there zebra mussels reproduce so rapidly and are nearly impossible to get rid of as they clog up the infrastructure.

To combat zebra mussels, the Humboldt Wildlife Federation has containment traps and testing is done throughout the year on the local lakes. The devices are placed by the docks and are checked on a regular basis.

"All they are is a little plastic container which is an ideal habitat for zebra mussels and if their in or on there you defiantly have a problem," stated Shidlowsky.

To clean a boat properly and effectively, remove the drain plug, lower the engine and drain all standing water from the watercraft, trailer, and related equipment. Then dry all compartments on the watercraft and all accessories or equipment that was used during your trip. Also be sure to clean all aquatic plants and mud from all parts the boat and trailer, including your anchor and rope, angling gear, and recreational equipment.

The Ministry of Environment reminds boaters to arrange an inspection if you have recently purchased a watercraft from out-of-province by calling 1-800-567-4224.
