When it comes to teaching, administrators are of as much importance as teachers, and they too must meet to discuss the future and what the path to get there holds.

It was a day of administrative focus on November 5th and 6th, as the Horizon School Division hosted its 4th annual Literacy Symposium right here in Humboldt. A literacy team with Horizon School Division, consisting of 5 coaches, sat down after last years symposium and together molded the planned outline for this year's function. They take into account all of the procedures taken within classrooms and schools throughout the year and review what needs to change, and what can continue on as such. The symposium brings together all of the inputting benefactors of the school division and gives them a weekend of focussed reflection time with other individuals in the same career line.

Katherine Oviatt, Supervisor of Literacy and Early Learning Services with HZSD, explained the importance of the function at the Uniplex. "Every year, we have a 2-day literacy symposium, where we bring professional development directly to our administrators, and we involve them with professional learning within literacy." Oviatt went on, "Every year, as we notice certain ongoings throughout the schools in the division, we really try to make sure they have support in what good instruction should look like and in turn, relay that to the great teachers in our division."

The symposium was attended by over 75 teachers and especially administrators. The symposium happens every year around November, to give adequate time for new teachers and administrators to adjust to their surroundings. Jennison also noted that this symposium was unique, in the way that those attending the symposium set the agenda of what the event would tackle. They did this in hopes of building their learning together.

The symposium provides great insight for all Horizon School Division employees and will be a huge benefactor in the near and distant future.
