Blake Jeffrey Schreiner, originally from the Cudworth area, has been sent for an NCR assessment as part of the proceedings in his first-degree murder charge. Schreiner is accused of murdering his wife on January 31, 2019.

The NCR or Not Criminally Responsible assessment was ordered by the provincial court judge presiding over Schreiner’s case. As a result, Schreiner’s defence attorney requested an adjournment to April 4, which will be Schreiner’s next appearance in a Saskatoon courtroom.

As a basic principle in Canadian criminal law, an individual must be capable of forming intent to be criminally responsible for an action. The result of an NCR assessment could determine that the accused was not aware of right or wrong, or was not capable of being in charge of his actions. The basis of first degree is murder is the ability to form intent.

Schreiner’s proceedings will resume next month. A plea in the case has not been entered.
