This is the final year for the Farm Stewardship program under the Growing Forward 2 framework, which can help farmers seed marginal land back to forages.

Trevor Lennox, Regional Forage Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, says the program helps producers implement best management practices to protect high risk erodible and saline soils.

"If you've got land with topography issues or if it's got some sandier type soils on it or if it's got some saline soils on it or other environmental challenges I guess this maybe a program to help cover some of the costs of grass seed to plant it back."

Farmers can apply for a rebate of 50 per cent of their eligible costs under the program up to a maximum of $10,000. Projects must be completed on land that has been used for annual crop production for at least the last two crop years to be eligible.

Lennox adds the Farm Stewardship Program has seen a lot of uptake from producers through the length of the Growing Forward 2 program.
