Farmers have been bringing in some record yields but all the rain we’ve had is having a major impact on the quality of this year’s crop.

This week’s forecast for more rain and even snow in some areas will once again keep farmers out of the field for a few days.

Bruce Burnett, G3’s Weather and Crop Specialist says there’s significant downgrading from fusarium head blight in the cereals.

"We're also starting to see some bleaching lack of vitreous kernels in wheats and durum as well caused by the rainy conditions during harvest.

This is going to be a lower quality crop from an overall perspective in Western Canada this year. Although the oats have been good, the quality isn't where we normally are," he said.

Right now, when the weather co-operates producers are busy trying to harvest, haul bales and control weeds.

He also says the rain continues to have an impact on the crop.

"We're seeing some significant downgrading in the cereal crops due to disease - especially durum.

But also for Spring wheat and barley, we're seeing some impacts from fusarium head blight," he said.
