The Federal and Provincial Agriculture Ministers brought two totally different views on the Federal Governments Carbon Tax to SARM delegates yesterday.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay saying the money collected by the tax will go back to the provinces to decide how to use it.

Meantime, Provincial Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said they will continue to oppose the carbon tax.

SARM President Ray Orb says they have looked at the models in other provinces like Alberta’s Carbon Credits:

"As it appears to us now the province is going to dig their heels in and I think are members are going to be supportive of that and we're just going to hang tough. We do have a backup plan in place but in the short term, we are going to be supporting the province."

Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says the proposed carbon tax would cost an average grain farm $10 to $15 an acre in costs; for a 2500 acre grain farm that would mean $25,000 to $30,000 dollars.

He says farmers can’t afford that.
