While canola seeding might be a ways out, now is a good time for farmers to start making plans for seeding rates based on individual seed lots and fields.

Angela Brackenreed is an Agronomist for the Canola Council of Canada.

She provides some tips for producers who are preparing to plant the profitable crop.

"If you have picked up your seed you can now find your seed weight which is given in grams per 1,000 seeds and found on every bag of certified seed. With that information your plant send target and expected seed survival, you can now determine what your seeding rate should be."

She recommends shooting for around six plants per square foot, adding they've found that a 60 percent seed survival is fairly normal although that number can go up or down depending on conditions and your particular practices.
