Saskatchewan's auditor says a multi-million dollar fuel tax exemption for farmers should be reviewed.

The farm fuel tax rebate program has been in place for 30 years and applies to farmers, fishers and trappers, as well as those who heat their homes with fuel, primarily in northern Saskatchewan.

The provincial auditor Judy Ferguson says the program costs the government millions of dollars per year adding it's never been clearly defined as to why we need this program

Meantime, The President of the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan Norm Hall says he isn't worried about calls for a review of the program.

"Let's review it, make sure that it benefits those it is meant to benefit. Whether the 75 acres, minimum requirement, or $10,000 in sales needs to be looked at," he stated.

"In that review, too, we need to remember that we want to bring on new producers, greenhouse operations, fruit growers, veggie growers, all these kind of operations need to be looked at because that's part of agriculture."

Hall says the program provides an average of four thousand dollars per farm.
